PBS Offers Free Streaming of Charlie “Bird” Parker Documentary – Ongoing

In honor of what would have been jazz musician Charlie Parker’s 100th birthday (August 2020), the PBS series “American Masters” is offering ongoing free streaming of the documentary “Celebrating Bird: The Triumph of Charlie Parker.” At age eleven, he had just begun to play the saxophone. At age twenty he was leading a revolution in modern jazz music. At thirty-four, he was dead from years of drug and alcohol use. Today, Charlie “Yardbird” Parker is considered one of the great musical innovators of the 20th century.

Brazilian jazz master Moises Borges will perform a live stream concert from the Maltz Performing Arts Center, 1855 Ansel Road, Friday March 12 at 8PM, as part of their LIVE! (streamed) @ Silver Hall music series. Residing in Cleveland, Ohio for more than two decades, Borges has performed locally at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Playhouse Square and Severance Hall.  The concert will consist of original material, including songs to be included on his upcoming album. Borges’ band consists of Dylan Moffitt (drums/percussion), Gary Aprile (electric bass) and David Kasper (sax/flute).  Free, but donations suggested.

 

Grog Shop One-Year Worstiversary – March 13

Stop by the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., Saturday March 13 between 2 and 7PM for a toast to commiserate over the worse year in the venue’s history.  Proceeds from purchases of Lights on Lager will benefit the Grog Shop, Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, The Happy Dog and Mahall’s. Author Jake Kelly will be on hand to sell and sign his new book of poster/flyer art.  Music by DJ Rachel.  Masks and social distancing a must. Free.

Join theater critic/Author Bob Abelman as he moderates a virtual panel discussion with playwrights George Brent and Eric Coble, and playwright/actor Lisa Langford Thursday, March 18 at 7PM.  The discussion will focus on the act of creation during the pandemic, their thoughts on virtual theater and what they believe live theater will look like once playhouses are reopened.
