moCa’s Summer Block Party – July 16
moCa Cleveland, 11400 Euclid Avenue (44106), kicks off its new season with three new exhibits and a Summer Block Party Friday, July 16 from 6:30-11PM. Free!
- Aawful Aaron by artist Aaron D. Williams uses sports as an entry point to assist audiences in more deeply understanding anxiety and mental health struggles. This exhibition destigmatized open conversations about mental health, especially as they relate to black males.
- Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. maps the intersections and collaborations among a network of Los Angeles based queer Chicanx artists and their artistic collaborators between the late 1960s and early 1990s.
- Also on exhibit will be the works of mixed media fiber and sculptural artist Joyce Morrow Jones.
Cleveland Burger Week – Through July 18
Cleveland Burger Week continues through Sunday, July 18 at more than 30 restaurants throughout Greater Cleveland, including Gunselman’s Tavern, Scalper’s, Ninja City, Market Garden Brewery, Stevenson’s Bar & Grill, Southern Tier Brewing and many more. Many of these establishments will offer craft burgers for $6. Burger Passports will be available for participants to have stamped. Collect at least 5 stamps and be entered in a Grand Prize drawing featuring a Grill and Ultimate Grill Out!
Asian Lantern Festival at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo – Through September 5
Returning to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for the fourth consecutive year is the Asian Lantern Festival, presented by Meijer and featuring 70+ large-scale, illuminated displays made up of more than 1,000 lanterns.
“Asian Lantern Festival has become a summer staple in Cleveland, drawing over 150,000 guests each year to experience the wonder of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo after dark,” said Cleveland Metroparks Chief Marketing Officer Kelly Manderfield in a recent press release. Festival times are Thursdays - Sundays from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. through September 5.
Tickets for the Lantern Festival are separate from Zoo admission. Advance non-member tickets are $20 or a 4-pack for $60. Same day tickets can be purchased at the Box Office for $22 or a 4-pack for $66. Drive-through tickets are $54 per vehicle for members and $60 per vehicle for non-members. Children under 2 are admitted free. The Zoo is located at 3900 Wildlife Way (44109).

GroundWorks Dance Theater at Cain Park – July 23, 24
GroundWorks Dance Theater has resumed live performances this month. Their second venture will be at Cain Park, 14591 Superior Road (44118), July 23 & 24 at 7:30PM. The summer series will consist of three pieces:
- “Axis,” a new work by Adam Barruch, originally created for film and reimagined for the stage.
- A newly-staged version of “INSIDE,” by Cleveland-native Antonio Brown, a piece featured last fall in GroundWorks’ drive-in film showings last fall.
- “Sud Buster’s Dream,” choreographed by founding Executive Artistic Director David Shimotakahara, which premiered in 2019.
Tickets are $25. Doors open at 6:30PM.
‘The Shawshank Redemption’ auditions at Canton Arts – August 24, 25
Avenue Arts in Canton will hold auditions for a stage production of “The Shawshank Redemption,” Tuesday, August 24 and Wednesday, August 25 from 7-9PM at the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave. N Canton, [44702]. Callbacks (if necessary) will take place later that week. Auditioners are asked to bring a headshot along with a resume and be prepared to cold read from the script. “The Shawshank Redemption,” a novella written by Stephen King, was made into a feature film in 1994 starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins and received seven Academy Award nominations.
