Hilton Smith, Marsha Mockabee among Feb. 18 event honorees
The Contractors Assistance Association (CAA) will recognize several industry champions for their contributions in the advancement of equity and inclusion in the construction field during a Black History Month tribute program on February 18, 2025, from 4 to 6:30p at The Jerry Sue Thornton Center, 2500 East 22 St [44115].
“It pleases me to know, for 15 years, CAA has been able to provide connectivity and resources for growing diverse union contractors, engineers and design firms,” says Glen Shumate, executive vice president of the Construction Employers Association.
“During this 2025 Black History Month, it is important that CAA celebrate six champions who have made significant, meaningful strides. These individuals encourage us to continue our efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.”
The honorees include: Marsha Mockabee, president and CEO of Urban League of Greater Cleveland; Tari Rivera, president of Regency Construction; Hilton Smith, former Turner Construction executive; and Monica Womack, Ohio Department of Development. Posthumous honorees include former Cleveland mayor Carl B. Stokes and Thomas Cook, founder of Cook Paving Company.
“I am honored to receive this recognition from CAA,” says Smith. “I spent my entire career working to ensure minorities and women have a seat at the table in the construction industry. And, CAA has always been right there, working with me, creating opportunity.”
The event will include a program, food and networking opportunities. Sponsors include Next Generation Construction, Regency Construction and Whiting Turner Construction. It is open to CAA members and non-members. For more information, visit CAA Black History Month Tribute | Contractors Assistance Association.
