Jack and Jill of America of America was founded in Philadelphia in January 1938 when twenty African American mothers came together to discuss creating an organization to provide social, cultural and educational opportunities for youth between the ages of 2 and 19. The idea took hold and today the organization boasts more than 250 chapters nationwide, representing more than 40,000 family members.

Last weekend the local Cleveland chapter held its Twentieth Biennial Cotillion at the Hilton Cleveland downtown. The evening carried aspects of a rite of passage for nineteen accomplished young people on the cusp of adulthood.

The day has long since passed, if indeed it ever existed in the black community, when young people were introduced to society in some formal fashion. But the profiles of the young women and men who were celebrated at this year’s events reveal an obviously talented selection of young black men and women who are poised and prepared to make some meaningful contributions to society.

Here they are, mostly in their own words —albeit in third-person voice — dressed to the nines in formal studio photographs.
