The important community conversation centering on the Consent Decree that governs the reformation of the Cleveland Police continues online tonight from 6p-7:30p.
Tonight’s session — the tenth in the nearly year-long series co-sponsored by the Cleveland NAACP and the United Way of Greater Cleveland — will focus on youth and policing. Not many police departments in the country have clear policies on how police should interact with children; policies put in place to deal with adults are not necessarily appropriate for dealing with children.
Cleveland is among the first in the country to enact specific rules in this area. The proposed Cleveland policy requires that officers consider factors like the perceived age, physical build, and emotional state of anyone under 18 before using force.
Tonight’s conversation will review what has been done in the realm of problem oriented policing values as set forth in the Consent Decree, and what work remains to build trust within the community.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams, Timothy Tramble of the Cleveland Police Monitoring Team, Tri-C Police Officer Brandon Tisdale, recent Tri-C graduate Zri Hitchcock, and Gabrielle Celeste of the Schubert Center for Child Studies, Case Western Reserve University are tonight’s panelists. The moderator will be Alex Stokes of Fox 8 News.
