University expands Cleveland footprint with NBA team partnership

Central State University today announced the formation of a partnership with the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association that aims to produce a win-win for both the institution and the team.

Senior Cavaliers executives, including Kevin Clayton, VP Diversity, Inclusion & Community Engagement, Alberta Lee, Senior Vice President, People and Culture, and Corey James Director, D&I, Community Engagement & Fan Development, will visit Central's campus in Wilberforce tomorrow to meet with university administrators, students, and tour the campus.  University officials are excited about the possibilities the relationship with Ohio's only NBA franchise can offer to expand the HBCU's opportunities for student recruitment, alumni engagement, and professional development.

“We are excited about this engagement opportunity for our University community,” said Central State University President, Dr. Jack Thomas.  “We know the NBA has exuded a strong commitment to supporting the growth of the next generation of leaders from the black community and we want to avail ourselves for every opportunity we can to position our students at the forefront of this expanding support,” said Thomas.

The Cavaliers visit comes at the start of Central State’s Career Fair in which students from all four colleges meet with potential employers to discuss internship and career opportunities.  Each day is dedicated to a college.  The College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture will kick off the job-seeking event.

Central State, which lays claim to being Ohio's fastest-growing public university, has seen increased growth in enrollment, new academic programs, record-setting grand research funding, and new campus construction, according to a statement issued on the eve of the Cavs' visit.

Central State has hired a recruiter to manage the five-county Cleveland–Elyria region as it seeks to continue its growth.
