Way back in the 1990s, long before they formed their current music ensembles, Mikel Mahoney and Vince Robinson were establishing their bonafides as Cleveland creatives. Mahoney was a graphic artist and editorial cartoonist of local repute, while Robinson was already polishing his editorial and photography chops. Always on the lookout for local talent, The Real Deal, then in its infancy as a four-color monthly tabloid, had the occasional good fortune to employ them both as freelancers.

These days, they are perhaps best known for their musical exploits.

Mahoney provides percussion and backup vocals for the “feel good music” duo, Gruve Tonic. Together with his melodious bandmate, John Pearson on guitar & lead vocals, the pair will be performing this Saturday, August 14 from 6-9p at Picnic Hill Market Café, 20621 Fairmount Blvd. [44118], just off the  entrance to the John Carroll University campus.

Next weekend, on Friday, August 20, Vince Robinson and the Jazz Poets will welcome special guest saxophonist Ken LeeGrand for a night of jazz at Larchmere Arts, 12726 Larchmere Blvd. [44120].

Saxophonist Ken LeeGrand will perform at Larchmere Arts, August 20.

As part of his extensive musical career, Ken LeeGrand has performed with The Temptations, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, and Aretha Franklin to name only a few. He’s also done pit work for several Cleveland Play House productions.

LeeGrand currently heads the J@MS musical program at the Music School Settlement. J@MS is a weekly half-day immersion program for students ages 12-18, focusing on skill development, knowledge, and experience to achieve musical goals. Program courses include History of African-American Music, Theory and Improvisation, Small Combo, and Large Ensemble (Big Band).

Robinson and bandmate Rashon Blake will accompany LeeGrand on keyboards and drums, respectively.

Tickets are $10. Reservations can be made through CashApp at $thasoulpoet. Admission at the door will be $15.
