Harry Belafonte 94th birthday celebration – February 28

A surprise virtual birthday party is being thrown for actor/singer/songwriter/activist Harry Belafonte on Sunday, February 28 at 6:30PM and you’re invited! Belafonte turns 94 on Monday, March 1, but The Gathering for Justice has planned a weekend birthday bash featuring a cavalcade of stars including Danny Glover, Jay-Z, Susan Sarandon, Chuck D, Robert F. Smith, Bryan Stevenson, Stacey Abrams and many more!

London Natural History Museum 2021 Wildlife Photo Contest

Robert Irwin’s dramatic photo of the Australia brush fires — taken via drone — was crowned the winner of the London Natural History Museum’s 2021 Wildlife Photo Contest. Of the more than 49,000 images entered, Irwin was one of five place winners.  Check out the complete gallery of entries.

 

The Short.Sweet.Film.Fest continues through Sunday, February 28 at the Alex Theater in downtown Cleveland.

10th Annual Short.Sweet.Film Fest – Through February 28

The Short. Sweet. Film Fest. strives to showcase the best local, national, and international films from up-and-coming filmmakers.  Friday, February 26 - Local Filmmaker's Night; Saturday, February 27 - Comedy, Animation, Music Videos, LGBTQ, Drama, and Horror; Sunday, February 28, - Local Filmmaker's Matinee, Documentary, and the Award Winners.  Each night concludes with a networking event.  Click here for the complete schedule. All films will be screened at the Alex Theater, located on the second floor of The 9, 2017 East Ninth Street [44115].  Tickets are $25-$35.

Note: A health assessment and temperature check will be taken at the box office. Patrons who do not pass the health assessment or have a fever (temperature of 100 degree F or higher) will be refused admission. Patrons are required to wear a mask at all times unless they are actively eating or drinking. Refunds will not be granted to patrons who fail to wear a mask, fail the health assessment, or have a fever and are refused admission.

 

 

Comedian Don “DC” Curry at Cleveland Improv – February 26-28

Comedian/actor makes a stop in Cleveland for five performances at the Cleveland Improv, 1148 Main Avenue in the Flats Friday, February 26 through Sunday, February 28.  Curry may be best known as Uncle  Leroy from the “Friday” movie franchise or his recurring character on the ABC sitcom “Grace Under Fire.” Tickets are $20; one of the Saturday performances is already sold out.

 

The music of little-known black composer Florence Price is featured alongside

Heights Arts Close Encounters Series: Florence Price, Mozart & Gershwin – February 28

Live streamed from the BOP STOP in Ohio City Sunday, February 28 at 3PM will be Mari Sato, Isabel Trautwein-violin, Eric Wong-viola, Tanya Ell-Woolfrey-cello, and Robert Woolfrey-clarinet. Florence Price and Wolfgang Mozart share the spotlight in this concert. Price, an overlooked Black composer, lived until 1953 yet most of her beautiful work still remains unknown. Her haunting and melodic String Quartet no. 2 is paired with Mozart’s beloved Quintet in A-major, one of the last works he wrote before his death. The Close Encounters series features minority composers and new music alongside traditional favorites. General admission is $25; $20 for Heights Arts members and $10 for students.
