Cleveland Public Library series features Jelani Cobb, Heather McGhee in dialogue

 

Pianist and composer Aaron Diehl performs virtually as part of the Tri-C Classical Piano Series Sunday, February 21 at 2PM.

 

Tri-C Classical Piano Series featuring Aaron Diehl – February 21

As part of the 2020-2021 Tri-C Classical Piano Series, Columbus native Aaron Diehl will honor the musical legacies of famous Black composers such as Fats Waller, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Mary Lou Williams, John Lewis and William Grant Still during a free virtual performance Sunday, February 21 at 2PM. Diehl is a classically trained pianist and composer and has made a name for himself in the jazz world over the past 15 years.

"Throughout history, many Black composers have been overlooked," said Emanuela Friscioni, director of Tri-C's Classical Piano Series. "This performance offers an opportunity to appreciate and savor their incredible contributions to the art form.”  Click here to view the performance on February 21.

 

‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Virtual Discussion at East Cleveland Public Library – February 23

In conjunction with Black History Month and the ECPL Watch Club, the East Cleveland Public Library presents a discussion of the Netflix production of August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman Tuesday, February 23 at 4PM.  The film has received numerous SAG Award and Golden Globe nominations. The discussion will be held on the Library’s YouTube Channel.

 

The Cleveland Public Library presents a virtual discussion Saturday, February 27 at noon entitled “Understanding Policing in the 21st Century.” 

A related workshop precedes the discussion Wednesday, February 24 at 6:30PM.

 

Cleveland Public Library’s Virtual Writers and Readers Series  - February 24, 27

The Cleveland Public Library’s Writers and Readers series returns, virtually, on February 27 at noon with a dialogue between Jelani Cobb and Heather McGhee titled “Understanding Policing in the 21st Century.” Cobb is a writer for The New Yorker and serves as a journalism professor at Columbia University. His books include “The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress.”  McGhee is a political commentator, political strategist, regular NBC News contributor, and the author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together.” Free. In conjunction with the panel discussion, a virtual workshop will be held February 24 at 6:30 p.m. featuring civil rights attorneys Terry Gilbert and Gordon Friedman, the founding partners of Friedman, Gilbert, and Gerhardstein – a firm specializing in civil rights and criminal defense.  The workshop will be moderated by James Levin, Founder and Lead Attorney of LegalWorks.

 

The surreal work of graphic artist M.C. Escher is explored in the documentary “M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity.” 

The film is available to stream through the Cleveland Cinematheque through February 25.

 

Cleveland Cinematheque Virtual Theater – ‘M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity’ – Through February 25

Featuring Graham Nash and the voice of Stephen Fry, this documentary on the life of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher – as told by his sons and the words and images of the artist - is an engaging chronicling of his surreal, psychedelic black-and-white drawings bridged the world of art and mathematics, and affected a great many avenues in modern pop culture.  Screening fee is $12. With the purchase of a ticket, the viewer has five days to watch the film.
