The Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival’s latest installment of “Black Cinema Café” takes place Friday, July 23 at 7PM at Unbar, 12635 Larchmere Boulevard [44120].  This month’s film, “The Next 8 Seconds,” chronicles the life & career of Neil Holmes, an African American bull rider, as he talks about his challenges in the sport. This film was the GCUFF 2020 Audience Choice Award selection.  There will be a post-screening virtual discussion with director Jeff Chambers.   

Seating is limited; RSVP required.  Doors open at 6PM. Entrance to the film is free with a food purchase from Unbar.

 Lake View Cemetery kicks off an abbreviated summer concert series Sunday, July 25 with the Motown cover band, Etiquette.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lake View Cemetery’s summer concert series has been scaled back to one concert per month. The July concert, at 4PM, features Motown cover band Etiquette, playing many of your favorite classic R&B hits and performing on the lawn at the base of the James A. Garfield Memorial.  Bring lawn chairs and a picnic!  Social distancing protocol will be observed.  Please register. 

Rain date: August 1.  FYI: The concert location is easier to access by using the Euclid Avenue entrance (12316 Euclid).

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra presents a six-day virtual Summer Jazz Academy featuring instructional and appreciation courses.

Summer Jazz Academy – July 26-31

Sharpen your jazz knowledge and skills during Summer Jazz Academy, the six-day interactive virtual program, which runs Monday July 26-Saturday, July 31.  The program, designed and instructed by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra along with Wynton Marsalis, alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino; vocalist Camille Thurman; bassist Rodney Whitaker; trumpeter Jon Faddis and many others.  Courses include Jazz Language; Brass, Reeds and Rhythm Hang; and Jazz & JusticeEach day of the Academy concludes with a Master Class featuring one of six definitive artists being interviewed by some of today’s most prolific musicians on their careers, favorite recordings, and most memorable performances. Free, but suggested donation is $10.

The Wade Oval Wednesday concert series, known this year as Welcome Back Wednesdays, kicks off a shortened schedule beginning Wednesday, August 4.

The Wade Oval Wednesday concert series returns with an abbreviated four-week schedule beginning August 4 at 5:30PM featuring the popular jazz band Forecast.  Each concert will feature live music, food trucks, a beer and wine tent, and family activities.  Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic items: blankets, chairs, etc.  Please, no tents or grills.

Comedian, actor, and two-time host of BET’s “Comic View,” Bruce Bruce will perform at the Cleveland Improv, 1148 Main Street (44105) for five shows Friday, August 13-Sunday, August 15.  Tickets are $30 and $40.  Masks required when not eating or drinking. Bruce Bruce guest starred recently in an episode of the new Netflix sitcom “Family Reunion,” starring Loretta Devine, Richard Roundtree, Telma Hopkins and Tia Mowry-Hardict.
