The Color of Environmental Health

Cuyahoga Community College is hosting a panel discussion tomorrow, December 1 at noon on “The Color of Environmental Health: The Effects of Environmental Justice on Human Well-being”.

Leading the discussion will be Dr. Derrick Williams, professor of communication studies. He will moderate a panel discussion of community leaders who will share perspectives on key issues related to environmental health and justice — such as lead poisoning, air and water quality, tree canopy, and access to nature — disproportionately impact communities of color, and ways individuals can get involved to improve physical, mental, and community environmental health outcomes.

Panelists include Kim Foreman, Executive Director, Environmental Health Watch; Jesus Sanchez, Outdoor Recreation Specialist, Cleveland Metroparks; and Aneisha Young, a Mandel Scholar student at Tri-C’s Metro campus.

Equity on Display

The Urban League of Greater Cleveland’s former celebration of Equal Opportunity Day has morphed into an Equity on Display event this year that will be broadcast live by WKYC-TV3. Catch it on the tube this Thursday from 7p-8p or stream it here.

NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner

The Cleveland NAACP’s 109th Freedom Fund dinner is this Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel on Public Square. Events get underway with a 4p reception and the dinner is scheduled to begin at 5p.
Several awards will be given out at the event. Legendary educator Ted Ginn Sr., head football and boy’s track coach at Glenville HS, will receive the Freedom Fund Award. Rising Leadership awards will be given to Jazmin Long, President & CEO of Birthing Beautiful Communities; Valissa Turner Howard Esq., VP of Talent and Legal Affairs at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
Kim Foreman, executive director of Environmental Health Watch, Cecil J. Lipscomb, executive director of the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland, Inc., and Jeffery K. Patterson, CEO of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority will be saluted as Unsung Heroes.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge will be honored with the President’s Award, and India Pierce Lee, senior vice president for programs at the Cleveland Foundation, will be recognized as the 2021 Corporate Honoree.
MSNBC commentator Tiffany Cross is the keynote speaker.
The event appears to have sold out at $150/ticket. Online sales have ended.
There will be an afterparty, hosted by Courtney Ottrix, also at the hotel. It begins at 8p, and tickets start at $20. Pre-purchase is required and may be done here.
Everyone entering the venue will be required to wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. Guests will also be required to show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination or, provide a negative Covid-19 PCR test that has been taken within 72 hours prior to entering.
