‘Jacked’ at Cleveland Play House - Through May 21

Here’s a little something for the kiddos! The Cleveland Play House presents the virtual program “Jacked” through May 21, geared towards youth in grades K-5. Written by Idris Goodwin and directed by Colleen Jackson and Nathan Henry, “Jacked” is an interactive retelling of the classic children’s story “Jack and the Beanstalk,” modernized with a hip-hop flair.  Whether viewed in an actual classroom, or via remote learning, children will get the rare opportunity of interacting with the actors before and after the performance.  Starring Stefon Funderburke and Isabel Tucan. Cleveland Power of Sport Summit – April 29-May 1

The Cleveland Power of Sport Summit continues through Saturday, May 1 at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland.  This free public event, held in conjunction with the 2021 NFL Draft, celebrates themes of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) that demonstrate the power of sport to be a catalyst for positive change. The goal of the Summit is to allow attendees to explore new ideas, embrace differences and enact positive change in the communities they represent. Click here for additional information.

 

‘American Masters’ examines the creation of the song ‘Strange Fruit’

With the recent Netflix biopic “The United States vs Billie Holiday” bringing the legendary singer’s story to a new generation and earning Andra Day a Golden Globe Award and Oscar nomination in the process, writer Liz Fields penned an article for PBS’ “American Masters” series offering an in-depth look at the origin of “Strange Fruit,” the haunting composition that would become one of Holiday’s signature songs.

 

‘100 Yards of Hope’ documentary – Streaming through May 2

In conjunction with the 2021 NFL Draft, currently underway in downtown Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium presented the world premiere of the documentary “100 Yards of Hope,” on Tuesday, April 27, chronicling the creation of a football field-sized coral reef, the timing of which coincided with Super Bowl LIV, and features the work of Force Blue, a team of retired Special Operations military divers dedicated to saving America’s only barrier coral reef. The huge undertaking was made possible by NFL Green, the league's environmental program, that works to mitigate the environmental impact of the NFL's major events and create a "green" legacy in each community that hosts Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, and the NFL Draft.  Free screenings of “100 Yards of Hope” continue through Sunday, May 2 at 5PM.

 

 

 

“Prelude to Piano” Listening Series – May 5-19

Piano Cleveland and the Cleveland BOP STOP have collaborated on a three-part listening series, “Prelude to Piano” the first of which takes place Wednesday May 5 at 7:30PM  (and May 12 and 19) as a precursor to the 2021 Cleveland International Piano Competition, scheduled to take place this summer.  Attend all three sessions and you’ll be invited to serve as a Certified Armchair Juror during the 2021 Cleveland International Piano Competition, giving you the opportunity to vote for your contestant of choice for a special prize.
