Cleveland Play House presents ‘Blackademics’- May 22-26
Blackademics, a dark comedy that revolves around the lives of two black female college professors navigating success and racism, will be available for screening starting next weekend, Saturday May 22, through Wednesday, May 26. The play, featuring northeast Ohio actors Mariah Burks and Colleen Longshaw, is written by Idris Goodwin (Jacked!) and directed by Lisa Marie Scheuller.
Blackademics is the final production of the Cleveland Play House’s virtual 2020/21 season.
Melvin Van Peebles’ debut film, “The Story of A Three-Day Pass” is currently available for streaming via Cleveland Cinematheque.

Melvin Van Peebles’ first feature film, “The Story of A Three-Day Pass” was shot three years before his incendiary film, “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.” Starring Harry Baird and Nicole Berger, “Three-Day Pass” focuses on an African American soldier in Europe who spends a weekend leave in a whirlwind romance with a white French woman. The film is loosely based on a novel Peebles wrote while living in France. Tickets are $12; the film is accessible for 72 hours after purchasing.

‘Wake Up to Life: Out of the Ashes’ - May 15, 16 via Zoom
On Saturday, May 15 at 6PM and Sunday, May 16 at 3PM, make time to go on Zoom to view “Wake Up to Life: Out of the Ashes,” as co-directors Jeannine Gaskin and Ansley Valentine bring to life online enactments of excerpts from one-act plays and scenes written by four emerging African American playwrights featuring themes of self-esteem and health. $10.
Wake Up and Live is a non-profit performing arts educational organization committed to fostering and promoting diversity in the Cleveland art scene. Also, watch virtual interviews by journalist Harry Boomer with producer Sue Johnson, and two of the four featured playwrights — Evonne Fields-Gould and Peter A. Fields — on the Playwrights' Showcase.

Taco Tuesday is a way of life in Cleveland, but from May 17-23, the city will take the concept several steps further with Cleveland Taco Week, where eateries around town including Academy Tavern, Bomba, Gunselman’s Tavern, Sol, Tacologist and many more will offer $2 tacos. Make sure to pick up or download your Taco Passport, which will be stamped by participating restaurants with the purchase of at least three tacos.
