A new documentary celebrates 'the Greatest'

Cleveland Premiere of Documentary ‘City of Ali’ – Through June 24

Cleveland Cinematheque presents the Cleveland premiere of “City of Ali.” This new documentary, directed by Graham Selby, reveals how the death of legendary boxer and activist Muhammad Ali united the residents of his Louisville, Kentucky hometown — along with the rest of the  for one unforgettable week. Ali passed away on June 3, 2016, during one of the most volatile periods in U.S. history:  a divisive U.S. presidential election, a proposed Muslim travel ban, a series of police shootings of unarmed black men, and the global emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement.  Despite these challenges, more than 100,000 people lined the streets of Louisville for Ali’s funeral procession. More than a billion people worldwide tuned in to his memorial. Screening fee is $12, and this film can be streamed for 30 days.  FYI, the Cleveland Cinematheque will resume in-theater screenings on July 1.

Community Come-Up 2021 – June 12

Diamond Cut Barbershop, 5139 Superior Ave. [44103], will host the community strengthening event “Community Come-Up ‘21” Saturday, June 12 from 11:30AM-5:30PM.  Free refreshments and haircut vouchers will be available for attendees.  Representatives from the Cleveland Department of Public Health will be on hand to administer COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson).  Vaccine walk-ups welcome, or pre-register by calling 216-664-2222. There will also be guest appearances by Omari Spellman, London Fletcher, Antonio Lang and others. Music by DJ Ellery.  The Community Come-Up is one of a number of community events throughout the year hosted by Diamond Cut Barbershop.

 

Taste of Lakewood Restaurant Week -June 13 through 20

Head over to the City of Lakewood between June 13 and 20 for a smorgasbord of delectable dining options during the Taste of Lakewood Restaurant Week.  Among the growing list of participating restaurants are Angelo’s Pizza, Dang Good Foods, LBM, Voodoo Tuna and Waterbury Bistro. Special events throughout the week include a raffle to win a merchant gift basket; and a June 14 cocktail party, hosted by Western Reserve Distillers.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Restaurant Week replaces the annual Taste of Lakewood Festival, which is usually held outdoors.

Walnut Wednesdays Food Truck Lunch -   Wednesdays through September 1

The downtown Cleveland lunch staple is back in action.  The weekly food truck convergence known as Walnut Wednesdays kicked off June 2 at Perk Plaza at Chester Commons (East 12th Street and Chester) and will continue every Wednesday from 11AM-1:30PM through September 1. Check the Downtown Cleveland Alliance website for a weekly schedule of featured food trucks.
