The Virtual Great Lakes African American Writers Conference - October 1-3
The Great Lakes African American Writers Conference (GLAAW-C), opening today, is completely virtual this year. The conference features a weekend of poetry slams, music, lectures, panel discussions, theatrical performances and much more, celebrating the African and African American literary arts. An exhibit of new works by acclaimed filmmaker Kevin J. Everson & documentary photographer/videographer Kahlil I. Pedizisai opens today at the Photocentric Gallery, 15515 Waterloo [44110]
The public is invited to an opening reception for the artists from 5-9p this evening.
Everson and Pedizisai are Ohio natives (Mansfield and Cleveland Heights, respectively). Also, Nancy Redd Shelton & her Sounds of Jazz band perform at 6p on the gallery's Blue Windmill stage.
Boney James at Mimi Ohio Theatre – October 3
Grammy nominated saxophonist Boney James rolls through Cleveland for one performance at the Mimi Ohio Theatre in Playhouse Square Sunday, October 3 at 8p. James is currently on tour to promote his 2020 album, “Solid” - his eleventh No. 1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz album. Tickets range from $29.50-$69.50.
‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom' at Karamu House - October 8-31
Karamu House kicks off its 2021-22 season next weekend with the August Wilson classic, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. from October 8-31 in the Cleveland Foundation Jelliffe Theatre [2355 East 89 St (44106].
The play is set in 1927 and Ma Rainey, the "Mother of the Blues," is recording new sides of old favorites in a rundown studio in Chicago. Fiery and determined, Ma Rainey fights to retain control over her music, while her cocky trumpet player Levee dreams of making his own name in the business. More than music goes down in August Wilson's riveting portrayal of rage, racism, self-hatred and exploitation. Directed by Justin Emeka.

Love in Action, Ohio presents a Community & Family Resource Day Saturday, October 16 at 12651 St. Clair Avenue (44108) from 12-4PM.
