State Rep. Janine Boyd of Cleveland Heights [D-9], resigned her legislative seat today in anticipation of joining the Biden administration.

Boyd's new federal position has not been announced. Her legislative aide told The Real Deal Press that the Biden administration is expected to make an official announcement of Boyd's new role as early as Monday, April 25, 2022. He indicated that her resignation was a precondition to the formal announcement.

Boyd's departure from the General Assembly became public this afternoon via an email released by House Democrats lauding her service over the past four terms. She was elected in November 2014 to the seat formerly held by her mother, longtime state legislator Barbara Boyd. She is best known for sponsoring Aisha's Law, a measure aimed at reducing the risks of domestic violence by requiring law enforcement intervention in certain defined circumstances. The legislation, currently known as House Bill 3 [HB 3], has twice passed the Ohio House but has yet to make it through the Ohio Senate and reach the governor's desk.

In her parting message, Boyd expressed confidence that Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) and Rep. Carruthers (R-Hamilton) "will work together to finally pass Aisha's Law."

The House Democratic Caucus is now requesting letters of interest from individuals seeking appointment to House District 9.
