From the Editor's Desk

We begin with the sad news of the sudden and way-too-soon passing of the Rev. Stanley Miller, Sr., a champion in every respect.

• The Ohio legislature snuck through a new law in its December lame duck session, making us a 'stand your ground' state. Gov. DeWine signed the bill into law, and it has been in effect since April 6, practically giving a hunting license to some folk to confront some other folk. Today, the state NAACP and others, including a local state rep, sued the state. Read about it here.

• By some measures Ohio ranks 4th in how fast COVID cases are growing, and has the 13th lowest vaccination rate. Our reports bring you up to date on what the continuing pandemic means for children, for women and displaced workers, and for the millions of out-of-work Americans.

• This is the final weekend before next week's primaries, which include several municipal elections, none more important for our region than Cleveland's mayoral race, where seven candidates are vying for two runoff spots that will get them to November. Some are trying increasingly desperate and dirty maneuvers. We reported last week on one candidate's machinations here. We'll have another report tomorrow, along with this Friday's edition of Nate's Northcoast Notes.

• Pro football kicks off tonight and the Browns take on the conference champion Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday starting at 4:25p. But don't sit at home waiting for the game to come on. The tenth annual Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival kicks off tonight and will run through Sept. 17. And the 42nd Tri-C JazzFest will be at Cain Park. Snap your fingers if you remember Tri-C's Culbreth "Cookie" Cook and Nolen Ellison, who were there at the beginning!

Finally, in case you missed either, our most read article in August was this opinion piece, A Recurring Moment of Truth in Black America. Our most read piece so far this month has been New exhibit at CPL honors best of black Cleveland.
