Good Morning!
Excitement is in the air today as the Cleveland Browns kick off their 75th season in Kansas City today against the defending conference Chiefs. This is expected to be the best Browns team since the Kardiac Kids of the late ‘80s Kosar era.
We are two days away from Primary Election Day. Cleveland will have a new mayor next year for the first time since 2005. Tuesday’s vote will determine which two of the seven candidates on the ballot will advance to the general election. The contest has heated up the past few weeks with stealthy dirty tricks campaign mailer attacks aimed against Justin Bibb and Zack Reed, two of the three black men in the race.
No one we’ve spoken with is comfortable picking which two candidates will top the polls on Tuesday. We're making neither a prediction nor an endorsement, but we will have some observations about this race and others in tomorrow's CPT column.
Other cities also have primaries on Tuesday. Cleveland Heights voters will elect a mayor for the first time in history after deciding in 2019 to replace their city manager form of government. Garfield Heights voters will also make a pivotal choice following the early retirement of long term incumbent Vic Collova earlier this year.
We mourn the passing of two community stalwarts this week: architect James M. Whitley died Thursday. We previously reported the unexpected loss of Stanley Miller. [His funeral will be Friday, September 17, time TBA.] Also of note: LaVonne Sheffield, former chief of staff for Cleveland Mayor Mike White, died September 1.
The Black Professionals Association Charitable Foundation [BPACF] celebrates community treasure Bob Madison at a luncheon today. The organization has a new executive director and is excited about the return of its gala event, November 13, honoring the Black Professional of the Year.
Don’t forget to check our weekly selection of the week’s best political cartoons.
Finally, we will be on Ideastream Public Media [@WCPN]’s Sound of Ideas public affairs program this Wednesday morning between 9a-10a to discuss the election results.
Go Browns!
