Breaking his week-long silence following reports bySignalCleveland and others of allegations of inappropriate behavior towards city employees and colleagues, Cleveland City Councilman Joe Jones will apologize today for his “actions that have made others feel uncomfortable.”
The Real Deal Press obtained a copy of Jones' apology in advance of its release, scheduled for some time today.
Jones acknowledges in the statement that “the last few weeks have been very challenging for me personally and professionally,” in reference to the fact that City Council had authorized an investigation into complaints over the past several years that he has behaved inappropriately in bullying and suggestive ways towards city employees or others conducting business with the city.
In the statement, Jones says that, “…although unintended, I recognize that my actions have made others feel uncomfortable and I sincerely apologize. I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I feel a deep sense of remorse.”
The statement goes on to say that Jones will participate in “comprehensive sensitivity and professional conduct training”.
Jones earlier this week asked to be relieved of his council committee assignments until his training is complete. The exact nature and duration of that training is unknown and, according to Jones, is being coordinated with council leadership.
Jones was serving as chair of the Mayor’s Appointments Committee, which had not met in months while the investigation was ongoing. In addition to being relieved of that position, Jones has stepped away from council’s Safety Committee, Parks Committee, Development Planning and Sustainability Committee, and Workforce and Education Committee. He said he expects to be fully reinstated once his training is completed.
Jones’ Ward 1 seat will be on the ballot this year, along with all other council seats. Earlier this month, in accordance with the city Charter, Council reduced the number of wards from 17 to 15.
